How the league works

League Rules

Membership, seasons, playoffs and scoring.

1 Terms

League Player: a player who is part of the league and eligible for the playoffs.

League Approved Player: a player whose games count toward the league stats, but who is not part of the standings and is not eligible for the playoffs.

2 League player entry

New League Players can only be added between seasons. If a player is approved for the league in the middle of a season, they will need to wait until the next season to begin league play.

For a new player to be admitted as a League Player, they must:

  • Be unanimously voted into the league by all current league players.
  • Pass a tryout: win at least one game in a 3-game round robin with three current, sober league players who are within the top four spots in the league standings.

3 League approved player entry

Players can become League Approved at any point during a season. To become League Approved, a player must be unanimously voted into League Approved status by all current league players.

4 Season and playoffs

Seasons last for 6–12+ months, and always begin on the first day of the month after the season reaches the minimum number of games required. At the end of each season, the playoffs for that season begin. Either of these ends a season:

  • The season has been played for at least six (6) months, and at least three (3) players have played more than forty (40) games.
  • The season has been played for twelve (12) or more months, and at least three (3) players have played more than twenty (20) games.
To qualify for the playoffs, a player must play more than 2/5ths (40%) of the average number of games played by the five players with the most games played. The standings show the exact number for the current season.

The top four qualifying players in the standings enter the playoffs. Seeds are based on the standings at the end of the season, and any disqualifications due to lack of play move the players below the disqualified player up by one seed each. If the #1 seed is disqualified, the #2 seed becomes #1.

Playoff series are one-on-one, best-of-7 series: 1 seed vs 4 seed and 2 seed vs 3 seed. The winners play each other in a best-of-7 championship series for the Lord Spinny Jones Cup.

Changes can be made to the series format if both players agree and they are within the rules. A series can be no shorter than 7 games and no longer than 11 games. Changes to table, venue, cups, etc. are allowed as long as both players agree. If they can't agree, the default of the Handy Panel and standard beer cans is used.

5 Scoring stipulations

A. If a legal throw hits the correct side of the table and then rolls back off the table between the cans on the throwing team's side, the drop is split half and half between the players on the catching team.

B. If both catching players touch the die at any point while attempting to catch a throw and the play results in a drop, both players receive half of a drop UNLESS both players agree that the drop should be credited completely to one player. This does not apply if one player intentionally hits the die into the other player in a strictly malign manner.
